New GM Small Car to be Made in Michigan

Despite the company’s recent dip into bankruptcy, GM has some good news for Detroit. GM says that two Michigan plants will build a “future small car,” which we expect to be the previously announced Chevrolet Spark. The automaker plans to create 1400 new jobs at existing facilities: 1200 at an assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan, and another 200 at a stamping plant in Pontiac, Michigan. The facilities should start production in early 2011 and will produce 160,000 cars annually.
Currently, about 67 percent of GM products are built in the U.S. By 2013, the company says that figure will exceed 70 percent, thanks in part to this announcement.
