This fall, our friends to the south will have a new hatch to choose from when the all-new Chevrolet Agile hits the market. GM released a few sketches of the new compact five-door ahead of its official unveiling, complete with Chevy's two-tier grille, angular headlamps and a strong shoulder line flowing over the front wheel arches and through to its sculpted haunches.
The Agile was developed entirely in Brazil, and production is set to begin in a few months at GM's manufacturing center in Argentina. It's also likely that the Gamma II-based B-segment hatch will be built at the General's Lake Orion, Michigan facility and what we're looking at is the next generation Aveo, due to arrive sometime in 2011.

Before you weld a Chevrolet Volt, you have to stamp out the bodies

Volt body panels being stamped - Click above to watch the videos after the jump

The other day, we pointed you toward a video produced by General Motors that is part of a series on the building of the pre-production Chevy Volt prototypes. That video showed the model's IVER (Integration Vehicle Engineering Release) bodies being assembled, welded and painted in the body shop at the pre-production operations center in Warren MI. However, before you can weld and paint, you have to take sheets of steel and stamp them into the right shapes. It turns out that there were other videos that came ahead the body shop video show this aspect of the Volt's development.

How did GM arrive at 230 mpg for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt?

Neither General Motors nor the EPA are making declarative statements about how, exactly, the 2011 Chevy Volt will achieve it's much-touted 230 mpg rating that was announced today. GM's most clear statement (available in full after the break) says that some consumers "may be able to be in pure electric mode on a daily basis without having to use any gas" and that "key to high-mileage performance is for a Volt driver to plug into the electric grid at least once each day."
Without access to the actual method that the EPA is tentatively going to apply to plug-in vehicles (we have requests for clarification out to the EPA), all that GM's Dave Darovitz would tell us is that the number is "based on city cycles and we're not really talking in detail yet." Instead, the press release says that:

Under the new methodology being developed, EPA weights plug-in electric vehicles as traveling more city miles than highway miles on only electricity. The EPA methodology uses kilowatt hours per 100 miles traveled to define the electrical efficiency of plug-ins. Applying EPA's methodology, GM expects the Volt to consume as little as 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles in city driving. At the U.S. average cost of electricity (approximately 11 cents per kWh), a typical Volt driver would pay about $2.75 for electricity to travel 100 miles, or less than 3 cents per mile.

Frank Weber, vehicle chief engineer for the Volt, told AutoblogGreen that the EPA's method takes into account the two extremes: People who plug in every chance they get and therefore barely ever need gasoline and people who never plug in (if you're buying a Volt and never plug it in, we'd like to offer you a bridge or two. Call us). By figuring out what the average driver will do with the Volt, the EPA has declared that 230 mpg is reasonable. Weber said, "The number is in the ballpark, it is not unrealistic. The moment you are driving shorter trips, or you go on longer trips and look at your average fuel economy, this number is achievable."

Chevrolet Volt pre-production IVER prototype - Click above for high-res image gallery

While visiting General Motors' product technology showcase this week, we had the opportunity to take a tour through the pre-production operations area where the integration vehicle engineering release prototypes (IVER) Volts are coming together, and then later we went for a ride in one with chief engineer Frank Weber. GM started building these integration prototypes in late May and is currently finishing them at the rate of 10 per week. By the time the whole fleet is done later this summer, 80 Volts will be running through a battery of tests to evaluate all aspects of the car. There are currently about 20 IVERs running at Milford, Warren and elsewhere.
After the tour we went over to the Milford Proving Grounds and Weber brought out the newest Volt to take journalists for quick rides around the loop on "Black Lake", the vehicle dynamics area. Unfortunately, only Weber was allowed to pilot the Volt and since it arrived with a full charge, we didn't get an opportunity to experience the charge sustaining mode. Read on after the jump for more about how the Volt feels from the passenger seat and to watch a short video of our experience.

Chevrolet Camaro reportedly already sold out in Nippon

2010 Chevrolet Camaro - Click above for high-res image gallery

Sales of the born-again Chevrolet Camaro have been notably strong in its first few months on the market here in the United States, even beating its longtime crosstown rival from Ford in June and July.
Now, word comes from General Motors Asia Pacific that the Bowtie's latest muscle car is a hit (of sorts) in Japan as well. We must qualify the term "hit," as the car's total number of takers in Japan is very small, at "over 120 orders" - we could see at least that many within eyesight at any given time last weekend at the Woodward Dream Cruise. However, that's reportedly the American automaker's quota for Japan, although it isn't clear if the tiny allotment is part of General Motors' brand strategy or if the volume is limited by local government regulations. Either way, if you live in Japan and you want a new Camaro, you'd better put your name on Chevy's list for next year.
According to Inside Line, the new Camaro is expected to sell in Japan for the equivalent of $45,325 to $56,390, depending on the buyer's choice of either the six-cylinder or muscular V8 powerplant.

Bill Ford, AdAge chide GM over 230 MPG Chevrolet Volt MPG projection

The Chevrolet Volt's 230 mpg number continues to be questioned. The latest to criticize is Bill Ford, who takes issue not only with the General Motors-approved 230 figure, but also Nissan's claim that its Leaf EV will get 367 mpg. The real culprit here, Ford said, is the EPA's methodology, which he argues is meaningless. "This question devolves into madness," Ford reportedly told Green Car Advisor:

"The government will have to come up with a meaningful number for customers - a user-friendly label. And I think they will. I can't dispute that number, but I'm not sure it's relevant to the customer either."

Ford also said that since his company doesn't "have any particular expertise in batteries," they'll probably buy the batteries from established manufacturers for their own electrified cars.
Speaking of relevance, Advertising Age, the publication that was first to guess that the whole 230 teaser campaign was a GM plot, has determined that the stunt was a bad idea. The big problems it sees with the campaign are that it often gave people the wrong idea (that 230 would be the U.S.'s new a standard voltage for outlets) and didn't give people enough breadcrumbs to follow to the Volt. It created more questions than answers, until the big reveal last week. In any case, the whole thing was targeted at a younger, hipper audience, but are these the people who have $40,000+ to buy a Volt?

2010 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 launch control

Aside from the addition of the Grand Sport model, the biggest upgrade to the 2010 Chevrolet Corvette lineup is arguably the addition of launch control. The Corvette is by no means the first sports car to get launch control, but judging from our first impression of it this week, it may well be the best system out there.
Unlike a certain Japanese competitor, General Motors' Corvette chief Tadge Juechter made it eminently clear this week that use of the car's launch control will in no way kill your warranty. In fact, he explained that while a highly skilled driver could potentially beat the launch control system by a bit, the vast majority of drivers will find themselves getting of the line much more quickly and with markedly better consistency.

1968 SCCA Chevrolet Corvette tribute - Click above for high-res image gallery

Next up on the auction block is every Corvette-loving Walter Mitty's fantasy come true, a 1968 SCCA Corvette hardtop convertible race car. Okay, maybe that's not everyone's idea of the perfect Corvette, but for those of you old enough to remember the glory days of SCCA Trans-Am racing circa 1968, this car should hit all the right buttons. What started life as a perfectly adequate, four-speed 327/350 optioned 'Vette, has been transformed into the very special race car tribute you see in our gallery. It's a street car that looks an awful lot like the Trans-Am racers of the late '60s and early '70s.
The good folks at 2nd Generation Automotive Restorations are the ones who turned it into what you see here today, minus this car's current fire-breathing factory race engine, a genuine Bowtie ZL-1. That's right, the current owner found one of the factory's limited edition Ram Jet ZL-1 engines (number 155 of only 200 made) nestled in a '55 Chevy show car. The engine had just 36 miles on it and needed a better home. We'd say the result is pretty spectacularly awesome. This very car was featured in the August 2007 issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines and can be yours for a Buy-It-Now price of just $60,000 - it would probably cost nearly twice that much to replicate it today. If this sounds like the right car for you, you'd better act fast. Bidding ends today at 7 PM PDT.

The Camaro isn't even on sale in Japan yet, but apparently it's already sold out. General Motors Asia Pacific has already received 120 orders for the new Camaro, which is the quota for the year.

Pricing has yet to be released, but its expected to range from $45,325 to $56,390. Both the V6 and V8 versions will be offered.

The Camaro is selling well in the US as well, with it outselling the Mustang the past two months.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT FWD Test-Drive Update: A walk around the exterior

2010 Chevrolet Equinox Test Drive (Exterior)

Yesterday, we gave you a little peek inside one of our press cars for the week - the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. Today we’re going to walk you though the exterior of GM’s new crossover.

The 2010 Chevrolet Equinox’s exterior design is a mixture of the successful Malibu sedan and Traverse crossover. It features Chevrolet’s signature two-tier grille and prominent gold bowtie. The Equinox has strong fender shapes, a distinctive premium roofline and wraparound headlamps. The only thing we aren’t fans of are the tail-lamps.

As for yesterday’s comment by writeb, we are not driving the Equinox as enthusiasts. We are not accelerating hard or switching lanes like we’re in a BMW. However, we are driving regularly day-to-day and are not afraid to stomp on the accelerator when needed - we also have the AC since we’re having 90+ degrees here in NJ. Basically, we’re driving the car as an everyday owner of the Equinox would for a total of 30 miles or more daily. Fuel-economy currently stands at 22.1 mpg.

Chinese woman pulls 6 cars with her hair: This past week, Zhang Tingting became the first woman to successfully pull 6 cars over 50 meters with her hair. All we have to say is - ouch. We’re guessing she uses Garnier - Jalopnik

Fastest cars under $50,000: Forbes has put together a list of the fastest cars for under $50,000. Some picks include the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4, BMW 335i, Audi TTS, 2010 Camaro SS and the Ford Mustang GT. The Nissan 370Z seems to missing from the list and we’re pretty pissed off about that. On a side note, you should definitely go for the car pictured below. - Forbes

GeigerCars 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS

While we all wait for General Motors to release the next-generation Camaro Z28, German tuner GeigerCars is already offering performance modifications that gives the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS an outstanding 568-hp.

The extra power comes from sophisticated compressor reconstruction (aka, a supercharger) and allows for a maximum torque of 589 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm. Geiger says that “after the reduction of the end gear ratio, the Camaro reaches an impressive 314km/hr and even shows up the Porsche 911 GT3.”

Visually, GeigerCars Camaro SS gets a special front grille, low rear spoiler with a diffuser, air scoop, air ducts to cool the brakes, a rear spoiler and 20-inch wheels.

2010 Chevrolet Agile revealed, will it work as the Aveo replacement?

Chevrolet Agile 2010

General Motors today revealed the first image of the new 2010 Chevrolet Agile for the Brazilian market. Sales in Brazil will begin in October later this year with a 1.0L 4-cylinder engine under the hood.

“The Agile goes beyond a traditional hatchback. Our task was to conduct a vehicle for a demanding client. Great design, interior space and a crossover, ie a car transpired versatility to attract customers from a different urban public or to a surfer who loves the countryside, “said Carlos Barba, General Director of GM Design Mercosur.

Honestly, we’re a bit disappointed by the looks of the new 2010 Agile, especially when compared to the sketches revealed last month.

No word on whether the Agile will provide the basis for the next-generation Aveo in the United States, but we sure hope not. Especially, if it’s looking to compete with the Ford Fiesta.

2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

We absolutely love launch control features on the sports cars we get in our press fleet. Heck, we’d be lying if we said that we didn’t get up every morning - hopped in one of our press cars, headed over to a safe locations, and just counted down to 0.

One car we still have to get behind is the 2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport. However, GM just sent us some footage from a recent launch event where they presented the launch control feature.

Refresher: Power comes from a LS3 6.2L V8 producing 430-hp and a peak torque of 424 lb-ft when mated to a standard exhaust system. Output is increased to 436-hp when mated to the optional two-mode exhaust system. The model will also feature widebody styling along with a racing-bred suspension. The Corvette Grand Sport can be ordered with 1LT, 2LT, 3LT and 4LT trim packages. The 2010 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport starts at $55,720 for the coupe and $59,530 for the convertible.

A total of 8 next-generation Chevrolet Camaro Convertibles were spotted outside GM’s Holden plant in Fisherman’s Bend, Australia. All, but one, had a silver exterior with a tan roof - which is a very awkward combination so we’re hoping that they are just prototypes.

As previously confirmed, the next-generation Chevrolet Camaro Convertible will debut in the second-quarter of 2011. We expect pricing to be a couple thousand over its coupe sibling - but still competitive in the muscle car market.

Chevrolet to get bigger share of GM sales as Pontiac, Saturn and Hummer get dropped

Chevrolet Camaro SS

As GM shuts down or sells Pontiac, Saturn, Saab and Hummer, Chevrolet will become the value brand for GM, says Chevrolet’s boss Brent Dewar. He said that Chevrolet is expected to capture 60 to 65 percent of GM’s global sales, most of which he said GM expects to come from the U.S., China and India. He said that Chevrolet also plans to double its European sales to 1 million over a TBA period.

Dewar said that GM is asking Chevrolet dealers to upgrade stores and anticipate higher volumes in 2010 and 2011 as GM shutters 1,000 U.S. Chevy franchises, reports Automotive News.

“The Chevrolet brand is elastic enough” to cover the vacated spaces in the marketplace, he said. “Dealers will have to think differently about small-car values. We’ll still have low-price value versions but also more premium choices.”

During the first 7 months of 2009, Chevrolet sales have fallen 34.5 percent to 718,135 vehicles.

2010 Chevrolet Camaro outsells Mustang for third consecutive month

The Chevrolet Camaro has done it again - for the third consecutive month, the 2010 Camaro has outsold the 2010 Ford Mustang in an all out muscle car war. For the month of August, General Motors’ Camaro outsold Ford’s Mustang by 2,391 units.

General Motors reported a total of 8,680 Camaros sold in August while Ford reported a total of 6,289 Mustangs riding of dealer lots.

In June 2009, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro outsold the new 2010 Ford Mustang 9,320 to 7,362. Last month, GM sold 7,113 Camaros while FoMoCo sold 6,686 Mustangs.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT shows what GM is capable of

Reviewed: 2010 Chevrolet Equinox 1LT - Main

The Chevrolet Equinox has never really been a winner in the compact crossover / SUV segment. With sub-par styling and a somewhat disappointing power-train lineup, the Equinox has been often overlooked when compared to its key competitors; the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV-4 and the Ford Escape. That however, is all about to change in 2010.

For ‘10, the Equinox gets totally redesigned with a theme inspired by the Malibu and the Traverse; a brand new interior with a bunch of features, and a new 2.4L direct injected 4-cylinder that delivers an EPA-estimated 32 mpg on the highway. In fact, this is the type of vehicle that makes us think “what the heck was General Motors doing all-along.”

Improved Fuel Economy for Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra Pickups with 5.3-liter V-8

2010 Chevrolet Silverado XFE

For 2010, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra are more fuel efficient thanks to some subtle changes from GM engineers. Regular trucks with the 5.3-liter V-8 climb from 14 mpg city/20 mpg highway to 15/21; the fuel-sipping XFE models earn 1 extra highway mpg, for a rating of 15/22. Figures for hybrid variants of the Silverado and Sierra are unchanged.

The changes needed for these improvements reportedly don’t affect the payload, horsepower, or tow ratings of the trucks. New shift points for the trucks’ six-speed automatic and a lower 3.08 final drive ratio, as well as variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management (which sometimes runs the V-8 on only four cylinders to save fuel) help achieve the higher numbers.

If 1 mpg doesn’t seem like a big difference, consider this: improving from 14 mpg to 15 saves about the same amount of fuel as a car that gets 40 mpg instead of 33.

Chevrolet Announces Corvette ZR1-based C6.R GT2 Racer

Corvette Racing Next-Generation C6.R

Corvette Racing plans to debut an all-new race car in the American Le Mans Series. The car will compete in the GT2 category for the final five rounds of this year’s ALMS series. Based on the ZR1, the C6.R uses the street car’s body, aluminum chassis, steering, and other components.

For race use, the C6.R uses a 6.0-liter V-8 making 470 horsepower and 535 lb-ft of torque. (A mandatory air intake restrictor drops power: unrestricted, the engine makes 590 ponies.) The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission and drinks E85R fuel. Brakes are steel discs with ceramic-composite pads; the ZR1’s suspension has been heavily modified and is fully adjustable. Eighteen-inch wheels wear Michelin racing tires that measure 12.5 inches wide in front, 13 inches rear.

The C6.R also receives a steel safety cage and various aerodynamic add-ons. Racing series rules mandated that the rear diffuser’s strakes be removed, while the front splitter is the same size as that of the ZR1. Race ready, the car weighs 2745 lb, about 500 lb lighter than a ZR1.

2010 Chevrolet Equinox – Second Drive

2010 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ

Refinement saps any joy from the latest Equinox.

The small-SUV segment is the land of four-cylinder engines. Thinking it could get an edge up on the competition, Chevrolet sent its new compact Equinox SUV into the fray in 2005 with only a V-6 engine. The result? We didn’t fall for its cheapo interior and Chinese-built V-6, and buyers didn’t exactly flock to the Equinox, either. They kept on buying the four-cylinder Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, and Toyota RAV4 in huge numbers. So in 2007, Chevy slipped an even more powerful, 264-hp V-6 under the hood of the Equinox Sport, thus providing an answer to a question no one really asked.

For the Equinox’s second act, Chevrolet has redesigned it inside and out and now offers a four-cylinder—a 2.4-liter similar to the one in the Cobalt, Malibu, and Saturn Vue, except the Equinox’s four has direct fuel injection and a higher compression ratio (11.4:1). Output is 182 horsepower at a high 6700 rpm, and 172 pound-feet of torque gets delivered at 4900 rpm. Unlike GM’s powerful four-cylinder engines of the past, this one is smooth and emits nary a protest all the way to 7000 rpm.

GM Expects Chevy Volt to Achieve 230 mpg City

Chevrolet Volt Announcement

If you have recently been curious as to what that number 23 next to a smiling, cutesy electrical outlet meant, the secret is now out. The cryptic ad campaign was the new GM’s way of dropping hints to the expected 230-mpg city rating for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt.

In a press conference this morning, CEO Fritz Henderson discussed the new methodology under development by the EPA for rating plug-in hybrids that leads GM to expect a 230-mpg city score for the range-extended electric Volt. This new system weights vehicle ratings based on the expectation that they will travel more city miles than highway miles on electricity only. To define the electrical efficiency of plug-ins, the EPA calculates the kilowatt hours used per 100 miles traveled. GM is expecting the Volt, which is said to travel up to 40 miles using only electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, to use as little as 25 kilowatt hours per 100 miles in the city. Using a national average of about 11 cents per kWh, GM anticipates the average Volt customer would pay about $2.75 for electricity to travel up to 100 miles.

Henderson is withholding a highway fuel-economy rating but said it and the overall combined score will also be triple-digit numbers. Pricing for the Volt is still up in the air but many expect to see it top the $40,000 mark, although a government tax credit of $7500 is projected. The 230-mpg city fuel economy estimate further adds to the mountain of hype surrounding the Volt and Henderson assures that GM is not “over-promising” on the numbers. We sure hope GM delivers, in these times we all know it can’t afford to fall short of its promises.

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle

1967 Chevrolet Chevelle model

Yes, we know that’s not a real car above. But this model (convincingly weathered by a firecracker) is the reminder on Jared’s shelf that he owns an actual Chevelle, or at least pieces that will someday add up to one. Read the post and you’ll understand. Be sure to check out the rest of our toys here.

My dad and I bought our 1967 Chevelle (amateur SS clone) frighteningly close to a decade ago with no engine, no transmission, unidentified bucket seats from something modernish mounted on the wrong sides of the car and with the wires from their electric motors dangling out the doors, and a plywood center console that I could have bettered when I was three years old. Instrumentation in the center console included two identical vacuum gauges, neither of which appeared to have ever been connected to anything. As of today I’ve got an (almost) completed drivetrain sitting in a finished chassis while the body is being patched and painted at a shop I haven’t visited in several months.

I’ll offer the following suite of excuses for it still being incomplete: I had to go to college and spend the summers trying to pay for college, spent several years after college making barely above minimum wage—I think I did those last two out of order—spent only about six months both making enough money to spend any of it on the Chevelle and living within 30 minutes of the garage where the car was kept, and very recently got married. Now that I’ve sat and listed all my excuses, I feel like that’s reasonable justification for taking eight years to only partially reassemble my car.

In retrospect, we probably shouldn’t have bought this car—we had no idea what we were getting into and failed to notice several issues of varying severity, not the least of which was the unpleasant surprise that both rear quarters needed to be replaced—but Dad was the one to write the first check. I was so surprised when he made an offer that I wasn’t about to encourage him to keep looking around; I figured that whatever head injury he had suffered might heal the next day and then we’d never get a car. Apparently I wasn’t the only one surprised that he bought the car—my mom spent the next two years taking Dad to task for it. Once, when my sister’s erstwhile boyfriend stopped by their house and asked to see it, she said, “Oh, the Chevelle? Everyone should have one of those!” She’s behind the project now, I think.

Once it’s finished, Dad wants to cruise around in it. I say that, if all we wanted was a cruiser, a small block and an automatic would have worked just fine. There’s a reason we built a 454 and a Muncie four-speed, and that’s drag racing. Just one of the thousands of civil discussions we’ve had over the course of the project. It’s been a great father/son bonding experience, but I wouldn’t recommend this sort of thing to those who don’t already have a strong relationship. Tools are too easy to throw.

Splitting the difference between the standard Vette and the Z06.

Two seconds—that’s the most important figure to know when you’re considering the credentials of the new, 2010 Corvette Grand Sport. Those two ticks represent how much quicker the latest track-fortified Vette is around the hairy, 2.9-mile road course at GM’s Milford Proving Grounds than was last year’s model with the Z51 handling package. That’s a huge gain, one that bites off more than half of the Z06’s time advantage over the base Vette, and should convince skeptics that this is more than just a scheme to charge an additional four grand for the Corvette’s latest track pack.

2010-Chevrolet-Equinox-LT-65

Chevrolet’s new compact SUV stacks up right in the middle.

Most people in the Northern Hemisphere think of an equinox as being the first day of spring or fall, but Equinox is also, of course, the name of this small utility vehicle. We intentionally omit “sport” from that descriptor because this vehicle lacks the necessary athleticism to qualify—it could use some of the energy and fury of Equinox, the Norwegian thrash-metal band with which it shares its name. With the 182-hp, 2.4-liter inline-four motivating base models, it isn’t super slow, but drive prudently and you’ll think so. We recorded a best 0-to-60-mph time of 8.7 seconds and a quarter-mile in 16.8 at 84 mph. Those figures put it near the back of the mini-SUV pack, as does our observed fuel economy of just 18 mpg.
