Chevrolet Announces Corvette ZR1-based C6.R GT2 Racer

Corvette Racing Next-Generation C6.R

Corvette Racing plans to debut an all-new race car in the American Le Mans Series. The car will compete in the GT2 category for the final five rounds of this year’s ALMS series. Based on the ZR1, the C6.R uses the street car’s body, aluminum chassis, steering, and other components.

For race use, the C6.R uses a 6.0-liter V-8 making 470 horsepower and 535 lb-ft of torque. (A mandatory air intake restrictor drops power: unrestricted, the engine makes 590 ponies.) The engine is mated to a six-speed sequential transmission and drinks E85R fuel. Brakes are steel discs with ceramic-composite pads; the ZR1’s suspension has been heavily modified and is fully adjustable. Eighteen-inch wheels wear Michelin racing tires that measure 12.5 inches wide in front, 13 inches rear.

The C6.R also receives a steel safety cage and various aerodynamic add-ons. Racing series rules mandated that the rear diffuser’s strakes be removed, while the front splitter is the same size as that of the ZR1. Race ready, the car weighs 2745 lb, about 500 lb lighter than a ZR1.
